Vale Mail is a great community website run by local people in Castle Vale, Birmingham. It’s full of news and ideas that groups we’re working with can use. For example the photos page use slide.com to host photos which are then presented as a slideshow. We’ve been suggesting Flickr but this is a far better way of viewing multiple images from community events.

I’ve had across a couple of conversations with different people this week about video and its power for sharing news and information. So I tried a search for “Community Brighton” on YouTube and came across videos from the One World Community Show on Radio Reverb, the local community radio for Brighton & Hove. This is interesting because someone from the One World Community Show came to our web surgery, and a Radio Reverb volunteer is on our WordPress course.

Shane on the WP courseThis picture of Shane and David was taken on the web design course when we were discussing adding images. David has to announce the next community meeting and was thinking about an image to advertise it. The best suggestion was to use an image of donuts to lure people in.

Nice pic of the group that we’re teaching about web design at St George’s Hall in Moulsecoomb, Brighton. Today was the first of four half days and we managed to have everyone up and running with a page within an hour.

090629moulsecoombgroupLibby Davy then offered an eagle eye view of the internet, discussing Facebook and social web and blogging, to get their ideas flowing. This brought out lots of interesting comments and ideas and will definitely bear fruit as we knuckle down to learning how tio use WordPress.

As well as a local Councillor this small group of six also includes several people from the Local Area Team so I hope we can help them create a site which links together the many groups that are active in the area.
