SCIP is running a lunchtime briefing on WordPress.com on Monday 20th September. This is an ideal opportunity for people new to WordPress to come along and find out what all the fuss is about. Learn how the tools work, see some examples, and find out whether it’ll work for you. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

A light lunch and refreshments will be served, and there’ll be plenty of opportunities to talk to the SCIP team, and network with other attendees.

There are lots and lots of blogs supporting WordPress – some better than others. OneCoolSiteBloggingTips is one of the best we’ve seen. It’s operated by “TimeThief” – a name that you will have seen if you’ve ever had to look at the WordPress Support and Forums pages.

It’s an simple site to navigate around and set out in an easy to read magazine style. Another highly recommended site for your bookmarks list.

Gimp tutorials

Gimp is a free and powerful image editing software package – but it’s not very easy or intuitive to use. There is now a series of very helpful, free video tutorials available via YouTube. The Malgalin tutorials cover topics such as fitting text to a curve, merging and cloning images, etc.

Couple of useful (free) design tools

BG Patterns is a free tiling website. It’s very easy to use, lots of different option to play around with – particularly useful with the new Twenty Ten template. It’s a shame that you can’t upload your own images, but it’s free!

PicNik is yet another free photo editing programme. Again, very easy to use – especially if you need to make some quick tweaks to an image before you upload it into WordPress. Browser-based, so you can use it when you’re blogging in the wild!
